My Bondage and My Freedom is an autobiography written by renowned abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, in 1855. It chronicles his journey from slavery to freedom, as he escapes and finds his way to the North. The book details Douglass's struggles as a slave, and his fight against the oppressive institution of slavery. Douglass's narrative is an important historical document, as it provides a firsthand account of the horrors of slavery, as well as the courage and determination of the abolitionists. Through his story, Douglass is able to shed light on the inhumanity of slavery and the bravery of those who fought against it. His narrative serves as an inspiration to all those who seek freedom and justice and is a reminder that freedom is always worth fighting for.Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) was an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. Born into slavery in Maryland, he became one of the most prominent figures in the anti-slavery movement. After escaping from slavery in 1838, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement, speaking and writing widely on behalf of the cause. His autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, published in 1845, was a bestseller and a critical success. He also wrote two other autobiographies, My Bondage and My Freedom and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass. In addition to his work as an abolitionist, Douglass was an outspoken advocate for women's rights, and he held several public offices. He was the first African American to be nominated for Vice President of the United States. His legacy as a civil rights leader continues to this day. He is remembered as a champion of justice and equality, and as a powerful example of the power of courage and hard work. He is also celebrated for his eloquence and for his inspiring words, which continue to move and inspire people today.

MY BONDAGE AND MY FREEDOM is a book that should be mandatory reading for every high school student. The lessons it has within its pages are filled with depth and honesty as it shows the reader a harrowing, brutal and heart breaking look at slavery.Frederick Douglass was a slave for the first two decades of his life, but through determination, luck and maybe a little divine intervention, was able to escape the horrors of slavery. He dedicated his life then to helping with the abolition movement as he spoke throughout Britain and the U.S. against the institution of slavery. One of the most powerful moments in the book is one of these previously mentioned speeches in Britain. Speaking to Parliament members, Douglass lays out his case about why slavery needs to be obliterated from the earth and the things he says, stories he tells are shocking. The saddest part is that everything he tells them is true. This is definitely one of the better autobiographies I've ever read. It's eye opening and shocking throughout, especially when considering that anyone could have ever thought slavery was a good and "holy" practice. I can't for the life of me understand how someone has not made a movie out of this book. Fredrick Douglass' life on the big screen is long over due. I easily give this one 5/5!
